Upgrading from Nikon d3400

Hello anybody,

This is my commencement mail on the forum. I currently take a Nikon d3400 with a Nikkor 35mm 1.8, Tamron 16-300mm, and the eighteen-55mm kit lens. I started out more often than not taking pictures during my travels as a hobby (hence the 16-300), only accept recently started selling stock photos online, selling printouts to friends/family, and have done several photo sessions for couples, graduation, etc (no weddings though).

I never idea of making money with photography, but I am slowly building upward clients. I have had the Nikon d3400 for about 2 years now, but would really like an upgrade. I would like a more professional camera, only am not quite prepare for a full frame yet. I was thinking of the d5600, 7200, or 7500. I would really like an articulating screen (I discover myself getting on the ground at times), and something with improve low-low-cal performance. And non having an audio jack is actually killing me since I've been wanting to get more into video.

I've been debating what to do so I thought I'd ask here. Would anyone recommend upgrading my torso? Or rather purchasing higher quality drinking glass first?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated! And thanks for reading!

Not certain if they will give you better low light performance, as that is one good sensor in your D3400!

I'm not actually ane to assist , just it seems with the photographic camera's you mentioned , you volition get better AF, metering, a tilt/hinge LCD .

Seems the D7200 might have the better sensor, but the D7500 gives you faster fps bursts, ameliorate metering, aforementioned AF points...and  giving you two memory card slots.

Seems the D7500 made more for speed than other two.

D5600 , less AF points, smaller and lighter..possibly less of an upgrade.

But you know what your needs are, what your D3400 is missing and your upkeep.

This is a gear forum, so you'll get people telling you to get the D7100 or D7200 or D7500.  They but have the tilting screen though, non the fully articulating touch screen that you wan, and no touch screen, but it has a second command dial and a LCD display at the height.  They have the two memory card slots and 51 autofocus points vs 39 for the D5600, as if that's a huge divergence.

I was but at Best Purchase today. I tried out the D3500, D5600, D7200, D7500, D500, D750, and D850. I don't recollect you lot need a full frame body. I did not like the D5600 at all. The viewfinder is tiny and atrocious! Even worse and smaller than of the D3500. I was quite impressed by the results I got from the D3500, but over again, not much better than the D3400. Here is the D7200 at ISO 8000 (Yeah, I brought a SD carte with me).

WOW!

The D7500 was besides pretty good with racket:

Peachy at all!

But the D500 was the best of all. ISO 25600!

Not bad color and everything. So I would recommend the D500 or the D7200. I don't like the D7500, because only one bill of fare slot, more expensive, and no battery grip option. Hope this helps. Don't get a D5600. The D5600 is also missing a congenital in AF focus drive, and then many third party lenses and D series Nikons won't AF.

Merely a thought about upkeep when yous are considering what to buy. Every bit you lot are selling photos, I assume you lot are getting paid and therefore declaring your income for tax purposes.

If this is the case you tin can offset your camera as expenses against taxation. The more you spend the less tax you lot pay.

When information technology comes to upgrading you demand to consider what would assistance you brand more money. Basically that is ameliorate glass. Better glass unremarkably means heavier lens which would not rest that well on a D3400. The other affair nigh upgrading is what extra features yous want on your camera. There are a lot of bells and whistles as y'all move up the Nikon range, the ane I would point out is the viewfinder. Moving to a pentaprism is a meaning improvement over the D3400 and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Based on the types of photos information technology sounds like you're selling, a 50/ane.4 would probably exist a really good upgrade. A 24-lxx/2.eight would probably be a good addition besides. In full general, Nikon's professional lenses actually expect meliorate than their consumer lenses.

As to the bodies, y'all might desire to consider something like a used d300s, which is really affordable and does have your audio jack, but not your swivel screen. It does take a much nicer viewfinder and much better controls. When I beginning got my d200, it fell three anxiety to a physical slab and landed on the prism. Non a bit of damage. You can besides buy older AF lenses that crave the focus screw, simply you won't be able to use AF-P lenses.

If yous have two bodies, you can put dissimilar lenses on them and speedily switch back and forth.

I've been debating this for a long time.  The more I think nearly it the more I just desire to stick with dx.  I like the optical viewfinder.  Because of this and considering of upkeep I've settled on a d7200.  You can get a d7200 refurb directly from Nikon today for only $599 US.  I can't justify the price of the d7500.  I've tried both bodies in store and while the few ounces you save with the d7500 are nice I didn't like the deeper grip with the recessed button in the grip that bothered me.  I don't actually see myself dabbling with video and 6 fps are plenty for me so at that place isn't a compelling reason to go with the d7500 for me personally.  I likewise would like to get more into landscape and macro and the loss in resolution and base of operations iso DR are a very slight negative for the d7500.

D7200

If yous get a "certified Nikon refurb" 7200, information technology's an EXCELLENT photographic camera.

I upgraded almost 2 years agone, from a well used D5000 to the 7200 and the upgrade was amazing in performance.

I know a lot of people will poo-poo the Tamron lenses, but, I've had four birthday.  The xviii-270, yeah, I got it in 2010, it was a scrap Irksome to focus and so I got a seventy-300 and sold the 18-270 and got a 17-50 f2.8 which I dearest.  This spring, I got a 100-400 Tamron and absolutely love information technology.  I only had to send the 18-270 in in one case, the zoom collar was jammed due to a loose spiral on the within, but, they fixed it and sent it back no charge.

The 7200, at least in my employ has been an excellent upgrade, and y'all can pick a "refurb" up for a good price, if y'all desire to stay within a upkeep.  Information technology likewise helps if you have a dedicated camera shop also, that is an authorized Nikon agent.  Makes dealing with problems if you come across them easier.  My shop, was bought out past Bedfords a few years ago, but most of the guys that work there use to work for the old owner (which was in business since the late 1800's), so I've had 30+ years to get to know them, which also helps

Ii major cons that prevent me from purchasing the D5600:

one) the absolutely terrible viewfinder which someone already mentioned is worse than the 3500. Don't only this photographic camera, until you lot've looked through this viewfinder.

ii) the manual controls which require you to simultaneously press a office button and turn a dial isc bad-mannered, and really gets in the mode of focusing on the shot.

As for the 7200, I tally like it, but information technology's going to feel pretty heavy compared to your current setup, especially with a adept lens, which means you lot may end upwardly leaving it at habitation a lot.

If,I was you lot, I would simply upgrade your lenses right now. Count yourself lucky that you got a 3400 and non the bedridden 3500.

Er, it was the D3400 that started the 'crippling'  tendency. One of the things the OP was after was audio input.  The D3300 had a 3.5mm mini jack input and accompaniment concluding.  Those went AWOL, with a few other basic $.25, on the D3400 (traded for SnapBridge).

Welcome and congratulations on picking upward piece of work with your photography.

I have have a view that you lot only need to upgrade your photographic camera body when yous find it's constraining your photography in some style. Otherwise spend your money on good glass.  However, it sounds like you might exist hit that indicate.

Just thinking about your specific asks.  Of the iii upgrade bodies yous mention, I'd suggest the D7500 ticks the boxes.  D7200 has no articulating screen (I'd agree that'south a pain when working low - I find an articulating screen really handy).  The D7500 sensor is also a little improve in low low-cal.  I have the D500 with the same sensor and information technology'southward a footling  meliorate than the 24Mp sensor in the others but more than importantly, RAW images process more hands than those off the D7200 at loftier ISO so it's not all about pure sensor comparisons.

The D7500 can too do good quality video at 4K and information technology sounds like that may exist or get useful to you.

Please ignore anyone who says the D7200 has a better sensor than the D7500 considering it's 24Mp vs 21Mp.  I've put downwardly many tens of thousands of images on both those sensors and concluded over two years ago that in that location was naught material in the loss of the iii odd Mp over the slightly improve high ISO of the 21Mp.  I actually very marginally prefer the RAw images produced by the 21Mp sensor.  Information technology actually isn't a consideration that should worry you.  (NB I continue to use a D7200 alongside a D500 and remain very happy with both sensors.  That factor doesn't brand a deviation to which body I selection upwardly if I'one thousand shooting at or below ISO 800.)

Non having an audio jack on the D3400 was a retrograde footstep by Nikon (the D3300 did!).  If you did decide to go the better glass route, you can largely prepare this issue by using an off trunk audio recorder; information technology'south actually a amend solution in many cases.  Something  like a Zoom H1n recorder is both economic and flexible and is likely to be useful even if y'all upgrade your trunk a bit later and shoot more video.  Even using a mike into a phone can exist equally skillful  an option for many situations because it 99% of the time better to take a mic in the 'right' position (ie that'south non on the photographic camera hot shoe...).

The D5600 has a fully-articulated screen.  The D7500 has simply a tilting one.  The D7200'southward screen is fixed.

Re: Upgrading from Nikon d3400

If you do not listen that it has one carte du jour slot, that could be useful for back-up, hands down I would say D7500. Information technology has a tilting screen, it is ameliorate performer in low low-cal situation faster, meliorate handling than D5600. It has also a very expert AF organization, better than those ii cameras.

I would raise though another possible candidate. What exactly you got right now is a 18-300mm, a 35mm f/1.eight and a 18-55mm kit lens. This is not a big investment on lenses as they are cheap consumer lenses. If you expect to gain plenty money to recoup whatsoever camera and lens buy, I would also search on other manufacturers besides. I say this because I find Fuji X-T3 a really proficient candidate. Fuji APS-C lenses are improve for semi-pro solutions. With Nikon you have limited choices on APS-C lenses so yous normally have to wait on FF lenses.

Otherwise if you do not similar Fuji, mirrorless etc, still there are some skillful lens choices that you should also consider based on your needs. There are besides many lenses from third party manufacturers. I advise yous to have this vision about what lenses you mean to attach on your new camera.

For that affair, information technology tin can be good to just employ the built in recorder on the phone. I'1000 not sure almost other brands, but the iPhone recorder is total range and overall pretty practiced.

Case: a speaker at a lectern. If you tin can put the the phone on the lectern with the built in recorder it will produce improve audio recordings than any camera mounted mic at a typical audience location. And then just mate up the audio and the video. It would work skillful at a lot of weddings besides, or any other situation where there'south a place to put the telephone nigh the action and no risk of someone walking off with it.

Obviously there are many situations where information technology's non reasonable to ready your phone down, but when it is, it is free to exploit.

Completely agree.  Rode do a adept gratuitous  iPhone (and I estimate Android besides) app for telephone recording.  It's particularly dandy when using a lavalier mic setup.  Prune the mic to clothing, plug in and start the app.  Popular the phone into the speakers pocket.

I was just at Best Buy today. I tried out the D3500, D5600, D7200, D7500, D500, D750, and D850. I don't think you need a full frame body. I did non like the D5600 at all. The viewfinder is tiny and awful! Even worse and smaller than of the D3500. I was quite impressed by the results I got from the D3500, merely once more, not much better than the D3400. Here is the D7200 at ISO 8000 (Yes, I brought a SD carte du jour with me).

WOW!

The D7500 was as well pretty proficient with dissonance:

Smashing at all!

But the D500 was the all-time of all. ISO 25600!

Great color and everything. So I would recommend the D500 or the D7200. I don't like the D7500, considering simply 1 card slot, more expensive, and no bombardment grip option. Promise this helps. Don't go a D5600. The D5600 is also missing a built in AF focus drive, then many third party lenses and D serial Nikons won't AF.

Thank you so much for the input and sample photos. Those are really good points. I'm leaning more than towards the d7200, but notwithstanding haven't made a buy all the same.
